The Seven Headstands
In the Intermediate Series of Ashtanga Yoga, also known as Nadi Shodhana (nerve purification), the seven headstands—Mukhta Hasta Sirsasana A, B & C and Baddha Hasta Sirsasana A, B, C & D—form a powerful sequence that challenges both strength and subtle control. These postures are traditionally practiced at the end of the series and are designed to cultivate deep concentration, balance, and energetic alignment. Each variation builds upon the previous, progressing from the classic tripod headstand (Mukhta Hasta Sirsasana A) to more demanding forms like Baddha Hasta Sirsasana D, where the arms are bound behind the back. Together, these headstands refine the practitioner’s awareness, stimulate the crown chakra, and embody the transformative potential of the intermediate series.
